Lord huron ghost on the shore3/5/2023 ![]() Somewhere between the feral experimentation of freak folk, the sunny polyrhythms, and the obligatory references to rocks and trees that come with soul-searching folk-informed indie rock like this, Lord Huron either sound like brilliantly happy tropical indie rock (as on "The Man Who Lives Forever") or under-produced young country (as with the hokey title track). Being of several minds like this is the crux of Lonesome Dreams. The song is beyond catchy and beyond happy, bounding along ecstatically between huge choruses, friendly verses, and experimental found sound breakdowns. However, as soon as the song fades out, "Time to Run" begins with watery field recordings of bells and washy synth tones before bursting into a jubilant slice of acoustic pop owing equal parts to Animal Collective's happy-go-lucky freaked sounds and Paul Simon's Afro-pop-borrowing optimism. ![]() ![]() The searching harmonies and overblown pondering of nature don't help. As well constructed as the song is, it follows so closely the open-ended indie folk style of Fleet Foxes, My Morning Jacket, and the like that it comes off as a pretty blatant ripoff and little else. The album opens with "Ends of the Earth," a jaunty and triumphant song filled with imagery of rivers, mountains, and arid desertscapes. The wide-open pastoral feel of the album seems designed to calm the ongoing argument happening with Schneider's songwriting sensibilities, which seem conflicted between jubilant indie pop wanderlust and stoic traditionally structured Americana. Following two low-profile EPs, Lonesome Dreams is the debut from Michigan-born/Los Angeles-based sound sculptor Ben Schneider and his band Lord Huron.

Revolt on alpha pdf3/5/2023 Silverberg, only 19 when the book was published, can be accused of some inelegant word choices in this, his first outing (such as "making the necessary change-over to overdrive"), as well as some ungrammatical turns of phrase (".the gleaming chrome which decorated Earth cities," instead of "that decorated"). Still, his first novel is surely not without interest, warts and all, if only for comparative purposes. The future sci-fi Grand Master would of course go on to win loads of Hugos and Nebulas during the course of his legendary career, and write some of the finest adult science fiction ever created. On that Silverberg Web Site, host Jon Davis tells us that the novel "is not a major work by any standard," and that it shows "more promise than accomplishment," and it is hard to argue with him on these points. The book provides kids with an invaluable life lesson regarding the importance of following the dictates of one's conscience in life, despite the sacrifices that such actions might entail, and sticking to those decisions. The book features several well-done action sequences, such as Larry's rescue of another crew member while outside their starship Carden in deep space, and Larry and Heitor's brush with dinosaurs in the untamed jungle of Alpha C IV. Adults should be able to zip through it in one or two sittings with a happy, nostalgic grin on their faces. "Revolt on Alpha C" is a likable book-a simply written one, naturally-that moves along at a rapid clip. A tough choice for anyone, especially for a 20-year-old who is being pulled in both directions by the opposing forces. Three of the planet's four colonies are in revolt against Earth, declaring their world to be independent, and Larry must ultimately choose to either stay loyal to Earth and his sworn duty as a Space Patrol officer, or follow the dictates of his conscience and join the revolutionaries. But trouble greets Larry and his two best friends, Heitor van Haaren and Harl Ellison (yes, a tip of the chapeau to sci-fi great Harlan Ellison, then a budding author himself and a neighbor of Silverberg's, just as the name "Larry Stark" might be a tribute of sorts to Leigh Brackett's great space explorer Eric John Stark), when they arrive on Alpha C IV. In the book, the year is 2363, and the reader makes the acquaintance of newly graduated Space Cadet Larry Stark, who, with several other alumni of the Space Patrol Academy, is about to take the 15-day voyage from Pluto to Earth's nearest inhabited colony world, the fourth planet of Alpha Centauri. What a kick for me, then, to have recently laid my hands on a vintage 1959 edition of "Revolt on Alpha C," the first Scholastic book that I've read in over "cough mumble cough" years!) ![]() How fondly I remember checking off the order forms, with the B&W photos of the books in question, and the thrill of seeing the books arrive in the classroom a few weeks later, with their covers in full-color glory. (A quick aside regarding the series of books put out by Scholastic Book Services: These were the books that initially inspired my love of reading, way back in public school. ![]() Heinlein's 12 classic "juveniles" released from 1947 - '58, and can thus serve as a wonderful introduction, for the young reader, to the world of science fiction. Thus, the book is pitched at a slightly younger demographic than Robert A. I'd say the target age might be 12- to 14-year-olds those who were then enjoying books featuring the exploits of the Hardy Boys, Tom Swift, Danny Dunn and that ilk. Yes, Silverberg's first novel was aimed at the young-adult audience, or perhaps even younger. ![]() Originally printed as a hardcover book by a company called Cromwell, it is perhaps best remembered today as a 1959 release of the juvenile-book publisher Scholastic Book Services, a softcover affair of 118 large-print pages with charming illustrations by William Meyerriecks. A quick glance at The Quasi-Official Robert Silverberg Web Site will reveal that the author, during the course of his 60-year career, managed to somehow come out with no fewer than 75 science fiction novels, 180 "adult" and crime novels, 450 (!) sci-fi short stories and novellas, 125 adult/crime short stories, and 70 books of nonfiction.not to mention the 130 or so anthologies for which he served as editor! But all great writing careers have to begin somewhere, and for Robert Silverberg, that beginning was his 1954 novel "Revolt on Alpha C."Īctually, Silverberg had already seen one of his short stories, "Gorgon Planet," released earlier that year, but "Revolt on Alpha C" was his first full-length work to see publication.

Adu astrometry3/5/2023 Revisions to the measures were subsequently made, re-submitted, and accepted on November 13 and 14. ![]() The MPC automated e-mail response indicated that the astrometric observation report was correctly formatted, but that 24 of the 35 observations were rejected due to "inconsistencies in the measures (as determined by their departure from great-circle motion)". ![]() In the observation image, reference stars are circled in green, and Cerberus is outlined by a small, red box.Īfter data reductions were completed, the first batch of observations was submitted to MPC on November 13 at 04:55:06 UT. Below is a Astrometrica screen shot of the first light observation data reduction. A total of 35 observations were completed over three nights October 23-24, 25-26, and 30-31. "First light" to acquire observational data to be submitted to MPC was an image containing the minor planet (1865) Cerberus on October 24 at 02:54:14 UT (start of image integration). In the following weeks, minor planet targets were selected, and observational test runs and astronomic data reductions were completed on the nights of October 11-12 and 18-19 to resolve any program and system issues. The astrometric CCD-observing program began on October 9 with a review of the MPC Guide to Minor Body Astrometry. The test targets, which would later be used to submit astrometric observations to MPC and qualify for an observatory code, are minor planets: Prior to submitting observations to MPC, a number of prerequisites had to be completed, including telescope and CCD camera preparation, software installation and configuration, and target selection. The reductions are reported according to a special format for reporting astrometric observations to the MPC. For more information, please see MPC's "Guide to Minor Body Astrometry".Īstronomic observations are made by taking digital images through a CCD camera, and determining the position of the minor planet or comet in relation to stars contained in the USNO-A 2.0 catalog of approximately one-half billion stars.Īstronomic data reduction (to determine positions) is accomplished through the use of the software package, Astronomica. The MPC assigns a code upon receipt of acceptable observations. The first batch of observations submitted to MPC also consist of a request for an "observatory code". These observations are reported to the to the Minor Planet Center via specially formatted e-mail. Astrometry involves getting precise co-ordinates of objects such as comets and minor planets (asteroids) relative to the "fixed" background stars.

Ultimate intrigue pcgen3/5/2023 ![]() Can customize your own datasets (and improvements in the LST editors are coming down the line) Versatile generator can allow you to create any character or monster, including hit-die increased, templated, classed monster, etc. I have used both programs, with the caveat that I have used Hero Lab primarily for Mutants and Masterminds (though I've checked out the Pathfinder generator in demo mode since I won't shell out the additional $20 to unlock Pathfinder, since I unlocked M&M on purchase). and will not discuss it further here, as past experience shows trying to do so will end in tears. That's my personal decision and there are threads you can search for if you wish to see more information about it and arguments on all sides I have no interest in starting an argument about DRM vs. ![]() I actually prefer PC Gen (although I use Combat Manager for Initiative tracking, etc.), though in part it's a philosophical thing as I dislike Hero Lab's DRM philosophy and decided I no longer wish to support the product (the license activation in my personal experience is a PITA. In comparison, my Hero Lab will get used for the entire life that I'm playing Pathfinder - and that's already measured in years, not just hours. Sometimes, that's a game with 40+ hours of content/play time, but typically, it's 8-10. Also, when I buy a new video-game, I'm shelling out $50-$60 a pop. (I also like having a PDF version of a physical book b/c when I'm brainstorming while watching TV, I don't have to bring my library anymore. I don't consider it buying the books again. Nothing says you have to buy everything at once any more than you must buy every rulebook all at once. The interface is intuitive and allows me to create detailed NPCs (which I love to have rather than abbreviated versions) in no time.Īs for the price tag, buy it over time. It's the officially supported product, which is nice (not essential, but nice). oh and the full support of PFS in the Herolab program is awesomesauce. By the looks of the demo though you get full functionality from the feats and spells in herolab vs cliff's note versions in pcgen. ![]() with a little added patience as its all volunteer. Any reasons, or it's just the one you tried first? I've tried the demo of herolab, but the price tag (30 for the program, 10 for the apg, 10 for ultimate magic, 10 for ultimate combat and like 40 dollars for all the splats.) like 100 dollars all told make me feel like I'm buying the books all over again, vs pcgens price tag of free or the same things.

Bose soundlink revolve3/4/2023 ![]() ![]() “The Bose SoundLink Revolve+ is a great speaker, albeit expensive and a bit dated compared to the competition.Yes, it’s slightly on the expensive side, but for those who’ve loved Bose’s previous SoundLink speakers, the SoundLink Revolve Plus is an easy next buy. Its easy-to-use controls, built-in mic for calls, and even its weird handle make using this speaker effortless, whether you’ve used it for months or are picking it up for the first time. You can’t submerge it like you can with other portable speakers, nor can you talk to it in quite the same capacity as you would with UE’s MegaBlast or an Amazon Echo, but the Bose SoundLink Revolve Plus has its own charm. Verdict: The Bose SoundLink Revolve Plus is a terrific-sounding Bluetooth speaker that comes in a small package. The app is really only imperative if you plan on pairing the speaker with other SoundLink speakers. Without the app, the speaker is still simple and intuitive to use there are just a few well-marked buttons on the top of the speaker to control play/pause, volume and pairing. Treble can lose its crispness I noticed this in songs like Lana Del Rey’s “Lust for Love” and London Grammer’s “Hell to the Liars,” where the vocals of the Haley and Lana kind of blend in with the upper-midrange - however this is grasping at straws for a flaw.Įven though the speaker comes with a companion app, you don’t have to download or even use it. If there’s a fault with the sound of this speaker, it has to do with higher volume playback. Its sound is loud, immersive, warm and punchy, especially when listening to R&B and electronic music, like Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” and Avicii’s “Levels.” However, the speaker sounds good when placed against a wall, too it actually makes the bass more intense. Review: Given the omnidirectional design of the SoundLink Revolve Plus, you’d expect it to sound best in the center of a room - and it does. Both are slightly more water-resistant than the Bose SoundLink Revolve Plus. The Sony SRS-XB41 is a larger and front-facing speaker with more, albeit quirky, features. The other difference is that both UE speakers respond to Alexa commands (with Spotify support). It charges via micro-USB.Īlternatives: The UE Megablast and Blast are omnidirectional speakers that can be paired in a group set up through the UE’s companion app, just like SoudLink Revolve Plus. ![]() At high volumes, high frequencies can lose a bit of their bite. It’s not as pretty as Bose’s previous Bluetooth speakers, specifically the SoundLink and SoundLink Mini II, as it looks like a lantern. Watch Out For: No built-in voice assistant like Alexa or Siri. Also, this is Bose’s loudest Bluetooth speaker if you plan on playing music at lower volumes, the smaller and more affordable SoundLink Revolve might be a better option. If they have other SoundLink speakers and want to pair them with the SoundLink Revolve Plus, in either “party” or “stereo” mode, even better. Who It’s For: The Bose SoundLink Revolve Plus is a good standalone Bluetooth speaker for anybody, especially those who love Bose’s signature sound. And it has a built-in mic so you can answer calls without having to pick up your phone. It’s simple to use, with a few straightforward buttons, and carry. It can be grouped with other SoundLink speakers, if you have them, through the Bose Connect app. ![]() It’s a surprisingly compact Bluetooth speaker, too, noticeably smaller than other speakers in the $300 price range, such as the UE Megablast. The speaker sounds great whether placed in the middle of the room or against a wall. At low to mid volumes, it gives you room-filling sound with negligible distortion. Strong bass, which you’d expect from a Bose speaker, but the speaker pushes impressive midrange and treble as well. The Good: The SoundLink Revolve Plus sounds superb. They’re both splash-resistant, too.īuy Now: $299 (Amazon) Buy Now: $299 (Bose) The two speakers are specially engineered, with dual-opposing passive-radiators and an efficient transducer, to eliminate distortion and sound spacious and accurate. They are also Bose’s first cylindrical-shaped Bluetooth speakers, meaning that they play true 360-degree, room-filling sound, similar to an Amazon Echo or UE Megablast. The Bose SoundLink Revolve Plus ($299) was released in spring 2017, along with its smaller sibling, the Bose SoundLink Revolve ($199), and the two are the company’s newest portable Bluetooth speakers.
